Neighborhood
La Orotava is one of Tenerife's most beautiful and historic towns, located in the north of the island. With its colonial architecture, lush gardens and rich culture, it is a place that offers many interesting things to do and see. Here are some recommendations on what to do in La Orotava:
1. Old Town
Strolling through the old town of La Orotava is like travelling back in time. The cobbled streets are lined with stately houses with carved wooden balconies, churches and convents. Some of the highlights include the Casa de los Balcones, the Iglesia de la Concepción and the Town Hall.
2. Victoria Gardens (Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja)
These terraced gardens are a perfect place for a relaxing stroll. They offer a beautiful panoramic view of the old town and the Orotava Valley, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. It is an ideal place to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of nature.
3. Church of La Concepción
This church is one of the best examples of the Baroque style in the Canary Islands. Its impressive dome and façade are worthy of admiration, and its interior houses a rich collection of sacred art.
4. Museum of Ibero-American Crafts
Housed in the former convent of San Benito, this museum offers a fascinating collection of folk art and crafts from all over Ibero-America. It is an excellent way to learn about the history and craft traditions of the region.
5. The House of the Balconies
This 17th century building is one of the most emblematic in La Orotava. It is famous for its impressive carved wooden balcony and its interior, which has been converted into a museum dedicated to Canarian crafts, especially embroidery and woodwork.
6. The Mills Route
La Orotava has an interesting route that follows the old water mills used for grinding cereals. It is a unique way to learn more about the agricultural and economic history of the municipality.
7. Corpus Christi festivities and the Alfombras de Flores (flower carpets)
If you visit La Orotava in June, don't miss the Corpus Christi celebrations, where the streets of the old town are covered with impressive carpets of flowers and coloured volcanic sands. It is one of the most beautiful and well-known traditions on the island.
8. Teide National Park
La Orotava is one of the gateways to the Teide National Park, home to Spain's highest peak. From La Orotava, you can easily access the park's hiking trails or take the cable car to the top of Teide for spectacular views.
9. Botanical Gardens
Although officially belonging to Puerto de la Cruz, the Botanical Garden is very close to La Orotava and is one of the oldest in Spain. It was founded in the 18th century and has an impressive collection of exotic plants from all over the world.
10. Gastronomy
La Orotava has several restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Canarian food. Don't miss the guachinches, small taverns where traditional dishes such as papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), grilled meats and local wines are served.
