In Avon, NC, getting around typically involves a mix of driving, biking, and walking, depending on your plans and preferences. Here's a breakdown:
  1. By Car-
Primary Mode of Transportation: Most visitors rely on cars for getting around Avon and exploring nearby areas. Route 12, the main road running through Avon and the Outer Banks, connects the village to other attractions like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and nearby towns. Parking: Parking is widely available, including at beaches, restaurants, shops, and attractions like the Avon Fishing Pier.
  1. Biking
Bike-Friendly Roads: Avon is bike-friendly, with wide shoulders along Route 12 and several quiet side streets. Many visitors enjoy biking to the beach, local shops, or nearby attractions. Bike Rentals: Local shops, such as Island Cycles or Ocean Atlantic Rentals, offer affordable bike rentals, including cruisers, tandem bikes, and kids' bikes.
  1. Walking
Walkable Areas: Avon is compact and walkable in certain areas, especially near the beach, restaurants, and shops. If you're staying close to the beach, walking is a convenient and scenic option. Private Trails: Properties like Hygge By The Sea offer direct walking access to the beach, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
  1. Public Transit
Limited Options: Avon and the Outer Banks do not have extensive public transportation systems. However, some seasonal shuttle services might operate during peak tourist times, typically connecting major destinations.
  1. Golf Carts
Golf Cart Rentals: In some parts of Avon, golf carts are a fun and convenient way to get around. They are particularly popular for short trips to the beach or local attractions.
  1. Water Transportation
Kayaks and Paddleboards: While not a primary mode of transport, the Pamlico Sound offers calm waters for exploring by kayak or paddleboard. Ferry Services: If you're venturing beyond Avon, such as to Ocracoke Island, the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry is a great option.
Avon's laid-back, small-town vibe makes it easy to navigate, whether you're exploring on foot, by bike, or by car!
Family-Friendly: As parents of young children, we understand how challenging traveling with little ones can be. That's why we've made every effort to accommodate families with young kids. We provide a pack 'n play with crib sheets, a high chair as well as children's cups, plates, bowls, and utensils. There are also board games and puzzles for the whole family to enjoy!
Pet-Friendly Accommodations: We welcome one dog only (up to 60 lbs) for a fee of $150 per stay. This fee helps cover the additional cleaning required for pet hair. If any waste beyond hair (such as urine or feces) is found, an additional $200 cleaning fee will be charged. Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pet, and dogs should not be left unattended in the home, as barking may disturb neighbors. Please let us know if you are traveling with a dog
Pests & Wildlife We're on a barrier island, and coastal bugs come with the territory. Midges — tiny non-biting bugs that swarm in big numbers — are common in certain seasons, and mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be active on calm evenings, especially from late spring through early fall. A few things that make a real difference: keep the doors closed and the outdoor lights off after dark, and bring or use bug spray when you're out on the deck. We treat the property regularly, but breezeless nights can still bring them out. Breezy days and the beach itself are almost always bug-free.

Just had a great spring break mini vacation in Avon. The house is super cute with a perfect layout and very clean. Lots of cool surf stuff everywhere that makes it really feel like a beach house. It was so pleasant to look out onto the dunes directly from the deck with a personal path right to the beach. There was plenty of good cookware and dishes (we're all cooks) which is something a lot of rentals don't have but it was so nice to be able to find exactly what you need. Beds were really comfortable and the bathrooms super spacious. We will definitely be back! Hopefully when it's summertime! And thank you for welcoming our dog, She-Ra!

This was my first time staying in Avon, and I couldn't have asked for a better place. Clean, quiet and beautifully positioned behind the dunes but close enough to the beach to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf. The house is generous in size while still feeling cozy, and it has all the amenities you could ask for. It's also close to multiple eating options, bakeries and a Food Lion so that anything you forgot to pack is easily replaced. Elissa, the host, is very responsive and communication was great. Highly recommended!

We have stayed at dozens of properties, hotels, etc and this was a memorable visit and our favorite place. The hosts/property mgmt provides proactive communication and seamless process before, during, and after your visit. We loved how well equipped the kitchen is, everything high quality. The pictures of the house/view actually understate how phenomenal the view and peacefulness of the property are. You can hear the ocean from both balconies and really feel secluded. The location steps away from the beach cannot be beat. The hosts put a lot of care into all details and the experience for the guests. With two kids under 3, it was so easy to travel/pack knowing the house was already equipped for little ones. The house was exceptionally clean. The decor and surf vibes make the stay more of an experience compared to other beach properties I’ve stayed in.

We loved our stay at Elissa’s home! We had four adults, three toddlers and a dog. The location to the beach was perfect for our families. Plus there were restaurants and shops we could enjoy on rainy days. There wasn’t dish soap or extra TP, so we did have to buy that. The host dropped off a broom as the one at the house was missing. Lots of toys and games for the kids to play with. The highchair and pack n play were also used. Excellent and quick communication when we had questions. It was a great vacation and the house was beautifully decorated!
