Located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Catania is nestled between Mount Etna, Europe’s largest and most active volcano and the sea.
The city’s history is told through its stunning architecture, from ancient Greek ruins to the majestic Norman cathedral, Duomo di Catania (a 15-minute walk) and the magnificent Baroque palaces, including the Palazzo Biscari (an 11-minute walk).
The city’s lively food markets are not to be missed, particularly the daily fish market which can be found behind the cathedral. Here visitors can buy local fruit and meat as well as the catch of the day.
Energetic holidaymakers will enjoy the Park of Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, (a 1 hour and 55-minute drive). Guided tours and hiking excursions allow visitors to witness the volcano's awe-inspiring landscapes, including lava fields, smoking craters and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
