Sea glass collectors gather in historic Lewes
More than seventy coastal artists and sea-glass specialists gather in Lewes for a two-day festival near Delaware Bay and Cape Henlopen.
Event details
Twice each June, the campus of the Lewes Historical Society fills with tables of frosted glass, sorted by color and shine, alongside jewelry and artwork built from what the Delaware Bay has worn smooth over decades. The Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival draws a nationally recognized roster of more than seventy exhibitors, collectors as serious as gemologists standing beside hobbyists who started with a jar on a windowsill.
The show rewards slow browsing over quick laps. Vendors are generous with the stories behind their pieces, and the historic grounds, all clapboard buildings and shaded walkways, give the festival a setting that feels closer to a garden party than a market, unhurried in a way that larger craft fairs rarely manage.
At ten dollars for admission, the event is an easy addition to a longer coastal weekend. Lewes itself invites a two-night stay: Cape Henlopen State Park’s trails sit minutes away, Delaware Bay delivers reliably good sunsets from the beach, and Second Street’s restaurants make for an unhurried dinner after a day spent picking through tide-worn glass.
