Beach patrol race brings runners to the boardwalk
Runners gather at the Rehoboth boardwalk for an early-morning 5K supporting beach patrol traditions during a high-demand August resort weekend.
Event details
Now in just its second year, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol 5K starts where the boardwalk meets Rehoboth Avenue, close enough to the sand that runners can practically see the beach they’ll be lounging on an hour later. The race honors the local lifesaving culture that keeps Rehoboth’s beaches staffed and safe all summer, a direct tribute rather than a generic summer fun run built around no particular theme.
Being a newer addition to the area’s crowded race calendar gives it a different energy than the longer-running events nearby: smaller fields, a more relaxed atmosphere, and a course short enough that even casual runners can treat it as a warm-up to the beach day ahead rather than the day’s main event.
Staying within walking distance on Friday night makes the early start manageable, and the rest of Saturday opens naturally into boardwalk time, beach hours, and the coastal cycling trails just outside town. Spectating is free, and the compact course makes it easy to catch runners at more than one point.
