Fast coastal race launches Lewes summer series
Runners follow a flat Lewes course through town and bike trails, creating an active Memorial Day weekend near Cape Henlopen.
Event details
Doc Masser lent his name to one of the Delaware coast’s most established summer races, and more than three decades later the 33rd running still opens the Seashore Striders’ summer racing calendar. The course begins inside Legends Stadium at Cape Henlopen High School, then unspools across five flat, fast miles through Lewes and its connected network of bike trails.
The terrain is a draw for competitive runners chasing a personal best, and equally appealing to anyone who simply wants a good reason to be up early in one of the mid-Atlantic’s more agreeable small towns. Much of the route is visible from sidewalks and trailheads, so supporters can track finishers on foot or by bike as the field loops back toward the stadium in the early morning light, well before the day’s heat sets in.
Lewes rewards a stay longer than race morning allows. Set up downtown or in nearby Rehoboth Beach, and let the weekend unfold from there: Cape Henlopen State Park’s dunes and cycling paths, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal, and a leisurely dinner once the race numbers come off and the town settles back into its usual rhythm.
