Runners open Independence Day on Rehoboth trails
A holiday-morning 5K brings runners to Rehoboth Beach before the boardwalk crowds, pairing friendly competition with a full coastal weekend.
Event details
Rehoboth Beach starts Independence Day at running pace with the Firecracker 5K, a flat, fast course through downtown that’s been part of the Seashore Striders’ summer series for 36 years running. The early start is deliberate: finish, shower, and the rest of a full holiday still lies ahead, with beach chairs and boardwalk breakfasts waiting once the numbers come off.
The race draws a mix of serious competitors chasing series standings and holiday visitors treating it as a morning ritual before beach chairs and boardwalk fries take over the day. Because the course loops near downtown and the boardwalk, spectators can catch runners at multiple points without much walking of their own.
Staying nearby the night before makes the early start painless, and a car-light approach to the rest of the weekend, walking or cycling between the beach, boardwalk, and downtown, suits Rehoboth’s compact layout well on one of the busiest travel days of the summer. Spectating is free, and the race wraps early enough to leave the whole holiday still ahead of you.
