Ocean swimmers race parallel to Rehoboth’s boardwalk
Open-water swimmers race one Atlantic mile beside Rehoboth’s boardwalk, creating an exciting late-August coastal challenge for athletes and shoreline spectators.
Event details
A one-mile swim parallel to Rehoboth Beach’s boardwalk sounds almost too on-the-nose for a town built around that stretch of sand, but the Boardwalk Mile Swim has made a genuine tradition of it over four years. Two waves start around 8 a.m., with beach-patrol lifeguards providing safety support along the entire course and age-group awards following the final finisher out of the water.
The format is refreshingly simple: no transitions, no bikes, just open-water distance swimming timed early enough to finish well before the boardwalk fills with its usual daytime crowd of walkers and shoppers. That simplicity, paired with the built-in safety net of Rehoboth’s own beach patrol, makes the swim approachable for strong recreational swimmers who wouldn’t necessarily sign up for a full triathlon but still want a genuine open-water challenge.
Staying Saturday night and walking to check-in removes any morning logistics, and the rest of Sunday is easily spent enjoying Rehoboth Beach itself or exploring Cape Henlopen’s trails nearby. Spectating from the boardwalk is free and requires no special vantage point.
