Lathrop State Park stages fireworks over Martin Lake
Watch Independence Day fireworks over Martin Lake at Colorado’s first state park for a scenic July 4 by the water.
Event details
Lathrop State Park delivers one of southern Colorado’s most honest and satisfying Fourth of July experiences: fireworks launched over a lake in a state park setting, with the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains framing the southern horizon and the park’s juniper-covered hills pressing in on all sides. The fireworks launch at 9:30 p.m. on July 4th over Martin Lake, the larger of the park’s two fishing reservoirs, with shoreline and hillside positions across the park offering natural viewing areas without the infrastructure of a stadium event. Admission is $4 per vehicle, one of the most reasonable entry prices for any fireworks show in the state.
Martin Lake and the Park Setting
Lathrop State Park at 70 County Road 502 in Walsenburg encompasses both Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, separated by a narrow land bridge that gives the park its unusual double-lake character. Martin Lake is the deeper and more open of the two, with a marina, a swim beach, and a boat ramp that keep it active through the summer months. On July 4th evening, families spread along the grassy shoreline areas near the marina and on the hillside above the lake’s eastern shore, where the elevated position gives a clear line of sight across the water to the fireworks launch point. Arriving by 8:00 p.m. secures a comfortable shoreline spot; the park fills steadily from late afternoon.
Boating, Fishing, and the Water Before the Show
Lathrop is one of the few Colorado state parks with warm-water fishing in a genuine lake setting, and walleye, bass, and bluegill are all present in Martin Lake. Paddleboats and canoes are available for rent at the marina through the summer season. A morning paddle or a few hours of shoreline fishing before the evening fireworks gives the day a satisfying outdoor structure that suits the park’s character well. Horseshoe Lake, smaller and quieter than Martin, is the better of the two for a calm early-morning paddle away from the boat traffic.
Walsenburg and Nearby Dining
The city of Walsenburg, about 3 miles from the park, is a small but proud southern Colorado community with a handful of dining options worth knowing. Fiesta Time Mexican Restaurant on Main Street is the most consistent local choice for a pre-show dinner, with green chile dishes and combination plates that reflect the region’s strong New Mexico culinary influence. La Plaza Restaurant in the historic downtown has a similar menu and a dining room that fills quickly on holiday evenings, so arriving by 6:00 p.m. is advisable. The Spanish Peaks, a pair of dramatic volcanic intrusions visible from almost anywhere in the valley, are worth a morning drive closer on US-160 west before returning to the park for the afternoon.
Where to Stay
Martin Lake is the water anchor for a Lathrop State Park stay, and the park’s campground sits directly on the lake with some sites offering waterfront positions that are particularly desirable on the July 4th weekend. Book your stay near Lathrop State Park on Lake.com and make the fireworks the centerpiece of a longer southern Colorado lake camping trip.
