Event details

The Durango River Parade is one of the most distinctive Fourth of July events in Colorado, not because it is the largest or the loudest, but because it turns the Lower Animas River itself into the parade route. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours put-in at 50 Animas View Drive, costumed rafters, kayakers, and paddlers float through Durango in decorated watercraft judged for creativity, humor, and patriotic spirit while spectators line the riverbanks through the city’s Animas River Trail corridor. Participation tickets are $79 per person and include a raft, equipment, and a guide; spectating from the banks is free. The event runs through approximately 5:30 p.m.

The River Parade Route and Viewing

The parade route runs through the heart of Durango’s river corridor, passing behind downtown and through the Baker’s Bridge area before concluding near the Whitewater Park. The Animas River Trail, which runs 7 miles through the city parallel to the river, gives spectators nearly unlimited viewing access on foot or by bicycle. Families with younger children who want a riverbank experience without being on the water can walk the trail from Rotary Park downstream to find a comfortable stretch of bank, set up chairs, and watch the parade float past at a leisurely pace. The river in early July runs at moderate summer levels, fast enough to keep the rafts moving but calm enough for the creative flotilla to hold its formation and presentation through the downtown stretch.

Durango’s Character and What to Do Before

Durango is a town that rewards full-day investment. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, departing from the Durango Depot at 479 Main Avenue, runs daily steam-powered excursions north through the Animas River gorge that are worth booking for the day before or after the river parade. The Purgatory Resort area, about 25 miles north on US-550, has summer mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides that make a strong morning activity for families staying for a longer holiday weekend. Main Avenue through historic downtown Durango has a walkable commercial strip with galleries, outfitters, and independent restaurants that define the town’s personality well on a slow morning walk before the river parade launches.

Dining Along Main Avenue

Ore House Restaurant on Main Avenue has been Durango’s premier steakhouse since 1972, with Colorado beef, Rocky Mountain trout, and an upstairs dining room with views over the street that book out on holiday evenings. Seasons Rotisserie and Grill on Main Avenue is the most celebrated contemporary dining address in town, known for its wood-roasted proteins and seasonal Colorado produce in a warm, well-designed room. For a river-parade morning, Jean Pierre Bakery on Main Avenue, open since 1986, is the obvious breakfast choice: French-influenced pastries, coffee, and a small dining room that fills with locals before 9:00 a.m.

Where to Stay
