The world’s largest fishing tournament takes Dauphin Island
More than 4,000 anglers and 100,000 spectators converge on Dauphin Island for three days of fishing, weigh-ins, music, and coastal tradition.
Event details
Dauphin Island hosts one of the Gulf Coast’s defining fishing competitions each July, drawing more than 4,000 anglers and 100,000 spectators across three days. Lines go in at 5 a.m. Friday and the tournament closes at 5 p.m. Sunday, with daily weigh-ins, live music, and constantly shifting leaderboards keeping the energy high from morning through evening.
The rodeo’s scale is what sets it apart: this is less a single tournament than an island-wide event, with the weigh station becoming a daily gathering point even for families not competing. Watching the catches come in, category by category, gives spectators a front-row view of Gulf sport fishing without needing a boat or a ticket, and posted results boards keep the day’s standings visible as later boats come in to weigh their catch.
Spectator admission and entertainment are free, while competing requires a $60 open angler entry. Families should reserve island or Mobile-area lodging well in advance, especially those bringing a boat or joining a crew. Build extra time into the trip for the beach, the Alabama Aquarium, birding, and a Mobile Bay sunset between rounds of weigh-ins.
