Event details

Story Parlor at 227 Haywood Road presents the All Arts Open Mic Night on the first Sunday of each month, transforming its intimate space, complete with arched windows and amber velvet curtains, into a showcase for original storytelling, poetry, music, comedy, and dance. Founded by Erin Hallagan Clare, who originated the concept in Austin in 2015 before opening the Asheville venue, Story Parlor partners with Speakeasy Improv founder Tim Hearn to co-present the monthly gathering.

Doors open at 5:30 PM with rolling sign-up on a first-come basis. Shows typically accommodate 15-20 performers with strict five-minute sets. Admission is free (donations appreciated), and the house provides sound equipment including a Bose S1 speaker, wired microphones, and quarter-inch instrument jacks. The host curates performance order to represent diverse artistic mediums, meaning sign-up position doesn’t guarantee sequence.

Parking is available on Haywood Road’s side streets (free) or at Cooperative Coffee Roasters across the street after 4:00 PM. Pack Square Park lies 27-29 miles from Lake Lure (45-54 minutes), with Lake Powhatan much closer at 10-12 miles and Beaver Lake just 3-4 miles north.

West Asheville’s Haywood Road corridor offers exceptional dining within walking distance. The Admiral (founded December 2007) at 400 Haywood Road helped launch Asheville’s culinary renaissance in an unassuming former cab drivers’ bar. The Michelin Guide-recognized restaurant launched careers including that of Elliott Moss, who left to open Buxton Hall Barbecue. Nine Mile (founded 2008) at 751 Haywood Road serves Caribbean-inspired fare named for a Kingston, Jamaica neighborhood.
