A wildly creative day on the Mt. Washington Auto Road
Watch Alton Weagle Day bring creative first ascents to the Mt. Washington Auto Road, then take a drive-yourself summit for panoramic views.
Event details
Alton Weagle Day at the Mt. Washington Auto Road celebrates the legacy of Alton Weagle, who in the 1950s completed several unconventional climbs of the 7.6 mile road, including walking backwards, climbing blindfolded, and pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with 100 pounds of sugar. Today you can watch or take part in creative first ascents, with everything from unicycles and pogo sticks to costumes that range from mimes to superheroes, all aiming for the 6,288 foot summit.
You will find the best viewing at the base in Gorham, where the morning start sets the tone for the day. Most climbers begin early, and you can track progress from the base or by driving the road yourself. Pair your visit with a classic summit drive or a guided tour for White Mountains views, and plan for fast-changing conditions at elevation by bringing layers even on a clear day.
The event runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and arriving by 8:30 AM helps you secure a good spot and catch opening activities. Spectator entry is $15. If you want to participate, you need to submit your ascent concept to the marketing team for approval in advance.
Parking is available at the base near the Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, and lodging is easiest in Gorham or North Conway, with vacation rentals also available through Lake.com. The event typically continues in rain, though summit access may be limited if conditions become hazardous or high winds close the road, in which case the base becomes the main gathering point. Kids are welcome, dogs are allowed at the base on leash, and it is smart to use base facilities before heading up since options are limited during the climbs.
