Event details

Aspen’s Independence Day celebration has the quality of something that could not happen anywhere else, which is perhaps the defining characteristic of most things that happen in Aspen.

The Old Fashioned Fourth of July runs from 10:00 a.m. through approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 4th and includes a decorated bike parade through downtown, a full parade on the main streets, family picnic activities, gathering in the parks, and a drone show above Aspen Mountain at dusk. Wagner Park at 601 East Dean Street is the primary gathering point for the afternoon and evening. Admission is free throughout.

The Bike Parade and Downtown Gathering

The decorated bike parade is the most charming element of the morning program, drawing children and adults alike who decorate their rides in red, white, and blue before joining the procession through downtown Aspen’s pedestrian-friendly streets. The tradition captures something of the small-town Alpine village character that Aspen preserves underneath its luxury resort exterior, and watching children parade past million-dollar boutiques on streamered bicycles is a uniquely Aspen tableau.

The full parade follows through the downtown core, with Wagner Park filling through the afternoon as the festival atmosphere builds around food vendors, live music, and the expansive mountain views over the Elk Range that frame the park on its western side.

Maroon Bells and the Morning Hours

The Maroon Bells, two fourteeners reflected in Maroon Lake about 12 miles southwest of town via Maroon Creek Road, are among the most photographed mountains in North America, and a morning visit before the downtown celebration begins is one of the strongest possible openings to an Aspen July 4th. Reservation and shuttle systems restrict private vehicle access to the road in summer, so booking a timed entry reservation in advance is essential. The short walk around Maroon Lake from the parking and shuttle terminus takes about 30 minutes and requires no technical fitness, making it accessible for families with children.

The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies at Hallam Lake, within walking distance of downtown, is a quieter nature destination for families who want a morning wildlife walk before the parade.

Dining in Aspen

Cache Cache on South Mill Street, open since 1989, is one of Aspen’s most enduring and genuinely excellent restaurants, with a French-influenced menu and a wine list that consistently earns national attention. The rotisserie chicken with truffle jus and the housemade pasta are signature dishes worth planning around.

For a more casual approach on a holiday afternoon, Meat and Cheese Restaurant and Farm Shop on East Hopkins Avenue serves charcuterie boards, wood-fired sandwiches, and local Colorado cheeses in a market-style setting ideal for a picnic in Wagner Park before the drone show.

Justice Snow’s on East Cooper Avenue, set in the 1891 Wheeler Opera House building, is a well-regarded cocktail bar and kitchen for the pre-show hours.

Where to Stay
