Beach volleyball’s marquee tournament returns beside the pier
Professional beach volleyball teams compete over three days beside Manhattan Beach Pier, with free general viewing and a major Southern California crowd.
Event details
The Manhattan Beach Open brings professional beach volleyball to the sand beside the pier, where compact courts and a knowledgeable crowd create close-up intensity that a stadium sport rarely offers, building across three days toward finals and the event’s celebrated champions tradition beside the pier each August. A youth clinic held alongside the tournament gives young players an opportunity to learn from professionals in person.
The compact court layout means every seat is genuinely close to the action, an easy sport for children to follow even without prior volleyball knowledge, since the ball, players, and scoring are all visible from nearly anywhere along the sand.
South Bay lodging and parking become scarce on finals weekend, so a nearby Stay or bike-based plan is genuinely valuable rather than a nicety. Reserve accommodations in advance, pack sun protection for a full day on the sand, and fill time between matches with the beach path, swimming, or neighboring coastal towns. It is beach volleyball at its most watchable, right beside the pier, with free general viewing making it an easy add to any beach day. Beach sand holds heat well into the afternoon, so pack sandals for walking between the courts and the pier.
