Event details

Bartlett Lake sits 48 miles northeast of Phoenix in the Tonto National Forest, accessible via Cave Creek Road and Bartlett Dam Road through the northeastern edge of the McDowell Mountains. The reservoir covers 2,815 surface acres when full, fed by the Verde River and positioned at approximately 1,600 feet elevation, a low enough profile to stay warm year-round while remaining noticeably cooler and more vegetated than the urban desert below. The Bartlett Lake Bash, scheduled May 16–18, 2026, is the anchor community event on the reservoir’s social calendar, drawing boaters, campers, hikers, and water recreation enthusiasts from across the Phoenix metro and beyond for a three-day lakeside gathering that emphasizes the informal social rhythms of desert lake camping.

The Bash operates as an open, non-ticketed camping and recreation gathering rather than a formally produced festival: participants secure standard Tonto National Forest day or camping passes and make their way to the lake’s dispersed camping and designated sites, where the community atmosphere builds organically across the weekend. Live music, local food vendors, and group activities are part of the programming pattern, though specific performers and vendor arrangements are typically confirmed through the event’s social channels closer to the date. Glass containers are prohibited throughout the Tonto National Forest recreation areas; bring canned beverages and sealed containers. Fireworks are never permitted on Forest Service lands, a rule enforced consistently at Bartlett. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the camping and recreation areas with proper waste management.

What Bartlett Lake Offers Beyond the Bash

Bartlett’s fishery covers largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, sunfish, channel catfish, and flathead catfish, with the bass fishing ranking among the better accessible day-trip options within the Phoenix metro. Boat rentals are available at the lake’s on-site marina. Water skiing and jet skiing are permitted across the main body of the lake without the closed-area restrictions that apply to some of the Salt River chain downstream. Spring wildflower displays in and around the lake’s shoreline chaparral tend to be strongest in March and April, but May mornings still carry the lingering fragrance of desert bloom in the canyon-facing coves. The Tonto National Forest’s Verde River canyon system, accessible from the north end of Bartlett Reservoir, is one of the most rugged and least visited day-hike environments within 50 miles of Phoenix.

Good to Know
A Tonto National Forest pass (daily or annual) is required for both day use and camping at Bartlett Lake. America the Beautiful Annual Passes are accepted only at the picnicking sites; boaters require a separate Tonto Daily Pass and Watercraft Sticker or a Tonto Discovery Pass. Group events and fishing tournaments require a special use permit from the Cave Creek Ranger District. Contact the district at 480-595-3300 before organizing any structured group activity on the lake.

The Verde River and Nearby Water

Downstream from Bartlett Dam, the lower Verde River flows through the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation’s territory before joining the Salt River system. Fort McDowell Adventures, on the reservation, operates guided Verde River float trips through stretches of the river not accessible from public roads. The nearby town of Carefree, 17 miles southwest of Bartlett Lake, has fuel, groceries, fishing tackle, and a small downtown restaurant district suited to a pre- or post-Bash dinner without the Scottsdale resort pricing that surrounds it.

Where to Stay
