Retro pond skim party at Bear Mountain
SoCal’s springtime ski bash with pond skim, retro fashion, and live entertainment at Bear Mountain—perfect for a mountain weekend in Big Bear Lake.
Event details
Bear Break 2026 lands on Saturday, April 4 at Bear Mountain Resort in Big Bear Lake, California, about two and a half hours from LAX. The base area at 43101 Goldmine Drive transforms into a free, all-ages spring festival running from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, stacking three headline events against a full day of games, food, vendor activations, and live music. It works for families, friend groups, and couples alike, and the surrounding infrastructure of lake marinas, dining institutions, and accessible lodging makes it easy to build a full weekend around it.
The day opens with a Retro Fashion Show at 11:00 AM. Registration is free, onsite, and first-come-first-served, so arriving early matters since spots fill quickly. Costumes must be in good taste and provide appropriate coverage, but within those limits, creativity runs completely loose. Neon ski suits, ’80s aerobics gear, and mullet wigs are standard entries.
The Pond Skim at 1:00 PM is the day’s main event. Competitors charge downhill and attempt to skim across a purpose-built pool of frigid water at the base. Those who make it across compete for cash prizes and a 2026/27 season pass. Participation requires a valid lift ticket or season pass and a signed waiver. Spectators watch free from the base area with no lift ticket required. A live concert closes the afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. In 2025, surf-rock band Sun Room headlined. The 2026 performer had not been announced as of mid-February. Throughout the day, oversized lawn games, prize giveaways, and food-and-beverage service fill the base area, and exclusive Bear Break merchandise is sold at Big Bear Sports on-site.
Adult day lift tickets range from $129 to $158 depending on purchase timing, with dynamic pricing that rewards early buyers. Children 4 and under ski free, as do seniors 80 and older. Military families receive 25% off, and anyone visiting on their birthday gets a complimentary lift ticket. The Triple Pack+ offers three days for $299, and discounted FunEx tickets start at $51.90. For families with kids in lessons, add-on lift tickets drop to $39 at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, and kids’ lift tickets are free at Snow Valley when paired with a group lesson. Parking runs $30 to $40 on event days, first-come-first-served, with online reservations recommended at least 24 hours ahead since weekend lots regularly sell out.
The free Big Bear Trolley runs Red, Blue, and Gold lines connecting Bear Mountain, Snow Summit, The Village, and other stops throughout town, making a car largely optional once you arrive. A free intermountain shuttle also runs between Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, just two miles apart. Visitors driving from the coast can take the Sports Basement Ski Bus on select weekends from South Bay, Long Beach, and Orange County for $80 per seat.
Bear Mountain’s terrain breaks down as 15% beginner, 15% low intermediate, 40% intermediate, and 30% advanced. It was home to North America’s first terrain park, Outlaw, built in 1992. Group ski and snowboard lessons start at age 5, with private lessons available from age 4. Children 12 and under must wear helmets during lessons, which are included with kids’ rental packages covering boot sizes 1 through 13. Snow Valley’s Valley SoCal Youth Program bundles six group lessons for kids 8 to 12 with lift tickets and optional rentals for $299 to $419, and after the fourth lesson, the child earns a free 2026/27 season pass. Families can also visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, a wildlife rehabilitation center home to black bears, bald eagles, bobcats, and gray wolves, or ride the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain on Wildrose Lane for bobsled runs, go-karts, and mini golf.
