Pedal the famous Watkins Glen track after hours
Ride your bike on Watkins Glen International’s track during a special evening opening—family-friendly cycling with iconic motorsports scenery.
Event details
Bike The Glen opens Watkins Glen International to cyclists on June 6, 2026, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, offering a rare chance to pedal one of motorsport’s most famous road courses without competing for space with 800-horsepower race cars. This family-friendly evening event lets riders of all ages and abilities experience the 2.45-mile Grand Prix circuit, climbing through the Esses, rolling through the Bus Stop chicane, and accelerating down the back straight where NASCAR drivers hit 180 mph during competition. Your bike replaces the stock car, but the track’s legendary layout remains unchanged.
Helmets are required for all riders, and participants must bring their own bicycles. Road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and even tricycles are welcome, though the track’s steep climbs and descents favor geared bikes over single-speeds. Children are welcome if they can ride independently and handle the course’s 90 feet of elevation change. The track does not provide bike rentals, and electric bikes or motorized vehicles are not permitted.
Registration opens weeks before the event on the Watkins Glen International website, with a nominal fee typically in the $10 to $25 range per rider. Capacity is limited and slots fill quickly, so register early. Check-in begins at 5pm at the track entrance, giving riders time to stage before the 5:30pm start. The event runs until 7:30pm, allowing most riders to complete multiple laps if they choose. Support vehicles and SAG wagons are not provided, so riders should be prepared to complete the course without assistance. Water stations are usually available, but bring your own bottles to stay hydrated.
Early June in the Finger Lakes brings temperatures in the 60s to 80s with long daylight hours and generally dry conditions, ideal for evening cycling. Dress in layers you can shed as you warm up from climbing. The track surface is smooth NASCAR-grade asphalt, perfect for road bikes but watch for painted lines and curbing that can be slippery. Sunglasses protect against low-angle evening sun on the front straight.
Free parking is available in the main lots, and bathrooms are accessible at the track entrance. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the 5:30pm start to allow time for check-in, parking, and staging. If you finish your laps early, explore the facility’s Fan Zone or walk to the Argetsinger grandstand for track views. The relaxed pace makes this event accessible to recreational cyclists who wouldn’t consider racing but want to experience a world-class circuit.
After your ride, coast four miles downhill into Watkins Glen village for dinner at Seneca Harbor Station (seasonal waterfront dining) or The Wildflower Cafe & The Crooked Rooster Brewpub (established 2010). Walk the Seneca Lake pier to cool down, or drive to Watkins Glen State Park’s gorge entrance for an evening stroll through the lower cascades if park hours allow. For a full weekend around Bike The Glen, book lakefront stays on Lake.com along Seneca Lake where you can pair your cycling accomplishment with wine tastings, kayak rentals, and waterfront sunsets that last until 9pm in early June.
