Rapid City goes full Western for nine days
Enjoy rodeo action, parades, and Western showmanship in Rapid City in 2026—pair it with Mount Rushmore, Spearfish Canyon, and Custer State Park.
Event details
The Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo runs January 30 through February 7, 2026, across two primary venues in Rapid City, South Dakota: the Central States Fairgrounds and The Monument arena.
Dating to 1959, when 91 head of cattle across three breeds filled the original fairground building, the event has grown into South Dakota’s second-largest annual gathering after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It draws between 300,000 and 350,000 visitors over nine days, making it one of the most significant Western heritage events in the Northern Plains.
For adventure families willing to trade beach resorts for January cold, this is the real thing: working livestock, elite rodeo competition, and a regional culture that hasn’t been softened for tourism.
Rodeo Rapid City: PRCA Competition and Arena Highlights
The PRCA-sanctioned rodeo component, produced by Sutton Rodeo out of Onida, a sixth-generation stock contractor founded in 1926, has earned Top Five Large Indoor Rodeo honors seven times, including three consecutive years from 2023 through 2025. That ranking places it alongside premier events in Houston, Fort Worth, and Denver.
Inside the arena, the competition covers bareback riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, and the Mutton Bustin’ Championships, where kids hold tight to racing sheep in the event that consistently produces the loudest crowd noise of the weekend.
The program also includes Extreme Bulls, Extreme Broncs, a Ranch Rodeo, and the new “Rope, Ride and Slide” event scheduled for the first Friday. Broncs for Breakfast pairs 32 ranch bronc riders with a morning Bloody Mary bar, making it one of the more memorable ways to start a rodeo day anywhere in the country.
Livestock, the Trade Show, and Family Programming
The livestock side matches the rodeo in scale. In 2025, the horse sale averaged $21,045 per animal, with a red roan gelding named Missterish selling at the top price of $53,000. Breed shows for Angus, Charolais, Simmental, and other cattle lines culminate in the Hubbard Feeds Supreme Row, which draws serious producers from across the region.
The Cinch Trade Show stretches across more than 400 vendors selling saddles, boots, Western art, jewelry, and ranching gear. Families with younger kids gravitate to the First Interstate Bank Barnyard Animal Nursery, a petting zoo stocked with baby goats and farm animals that holds attention well between arena events.
Youth programming includes Lego tournaments and stick horse rodeos, keeping younger siblings fully occupied while older kids take in the main arena action.
Evening Concerts and the Tanner Usrey Show
Evening concerts anchor the social side of the week. Recent performers have included Ian Munsick, whose 2025 show sold out, and Jackson Dean. The 2026 concert calendar features Tanner Usrey, with additional acts likely to be confirmed closer to the event.
Tickets and the full schedule are available at centralstatesfairinc.com. Book early: hotel rooms in Rapid City fill quickly across the nine-day run, particularly for the first weekend.
Where to Stay Near Rapid City and the Black Hills Lakes
Downtown Rapid City hotels put you closest to both venues, with walkable access between the Central States Fairgrounds and The Monument. For families who want a quieter base with more space, lake cabin rentals near Sheridan Lake and Pactola Reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest sit 20 to 30 minutes from the fairgrounds.
Pactola Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the Black Hills, offers winter stillness, pine-framed shorelines, and a dramatically different pace from the arena floor. Browse available waterfront properties on Lake.com to find a Black Hills lake rental that gives your family both the adrenaline of the rodeo and the restorative quiet of a frozen January morning on the water.
