Event details

Dating to 1959, when just 91 head of cattle across three breeds filled the original fairground building, the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo has grown into a massive regional draw.

Today, the event attracts between 300,000 and 350,000 visitors over nine days, making it South Dakota’s second largest annual event after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The PRCA sanctioned rodeo component, Rodeo Rapid City, has earned Top Five Large Indoor Rodeo honors seven times, including three consecutive years from 2023 through 2025. That distinction places it alongside premier events in Houston, Fort Worth, and Denver.

Inside the arena, spectators watch bareback riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, and the always popular Mutton Bustin’ Championships, where kids hang on tight to racing sheep. The rodeo action is produced by Sutton Rodeo out of Onida, a sixth generation stock contractor founded in 1926.

The livestock side of the event is equally impressive. In 2025, the horse sale averaged $21,045 per animal, with a red roan gelding named Missterish selling for a top price of $53,000.

Beyond the arena, the CINCH Trade Show spans more than 300 vendors selling saddles, boots, Western art, and ranching gear. Families gravitate to the First Interstate Bank Barnyard Animal Nursery, which offers a petting zoo with baby goats, while kids compete in Youth Lego tournaments and stick horse rodeos.

Broncs for Breakfast pairs 32 ranch bronc riders with a Bloody Mary bar, catering to spectators who like their adrenaline served alongside eggs. Evening concerts add another layer of entertainment, with recent performers including Ian Munsick, whose 2025 show sold out, and Jackson Dean.
