A kid-friendly fishing derby on Waterville’s Corcoran Pond
Kids under 15 fish Corcoran Pond in Waterville Valley’s Casting for Kirby derby, with staggered start times, prizes, and a fun Town Square festival feel.
Event details
The Casting for Kirby Youth Fishing Derby brings you to the banks of Corcoran Pond in Waterville Valley for a focused, family-friendly morning on the water. Children under 15 fish a pond stocked with trout, right beside Town Square, so you can watch from shore, warm up with coffee nearby, and keep everything within a short walk.
You will see young anglers lined along the pond edge, grouped by age and competing for prizes, including the day’s top catches. The pace is calm and organized, with an outdoor awards ceremony in Town Square to close the event. After trophies and photos, many families stay in the village for lunch or head out to nearby trails, and we like how easy it is to turn the derby into a full morning in the mountains.
Plan to arrive by 8:15 AM if you want a strong spot along the water, since the shoreline fills quickly. Registration starts at $8 and varies by age and residency, and it is smart to sign up early through the Recreation Department. Bring your own rod and tackle if you can, dress in layers with waterproof boots for cool May conditions, and use the main Waterville Valley lots for parking, then walk to the pond.
If the weather shifts, the derby usually runs in light rain but may pause for unsafe conditions. Dogs are welcome in the village on leash, but keep them back from the active fishing line area. Food is close at hand in Town Square cafes and delis, and for the simplest logistics, book a lodge or condo in the Waterville Valley Resort area so you can walk to the pond, with additional cabins and seasonal homes available in the broader Pemigewasset Valley.
