Celebration at the Station

Celebration at the Station is Kansas City’s primary Memorial Day tradition, and you will feel it the moment you step onto the lawns of Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial. We gather for a free outdoor concert as the Kansas City Symphony plays patriotic selections against the backdrop of limestone architecture and a late-spring sunset. Plan on a communal night that suits families, couples, and anyone who wants to mark the holiday in public, with music as the centerpiece.

Arrive mid-afternoon to settle in before the main performance. Food trucks and local vendors line the perimeter, and the family area often features hands-on activities, including an instrument petting zoo. The symphony’s set runs about 100 minutes, and the finale is the 1812 Overture with live cannon fire that carries across the grounds.

When the last notes fade, stay put for the grand finale: a choreographed fireworks show above the Liberty Memorial, known for its scale. Most attendees bring blankets and low-profile lawn chairs and claim their spot early, especially on the North Lawn or South Plaza. With crowds often reaching 50,000, arriving when the gates open is the surest way to secure a clear view.

Getting in and out takes strategy. Use the KC Streetcar to reduce traffic stress, parking along the route and riding to the Union Station stop, or expect around $20 if you use official Union Station garages or nearby surface lots. You can bring a picnic or rely on food trucks, but skip glass containers due to typical safety restrictions. The concert is free, the symphony will play through light rain but pauses for lightning, and while pets are not strictly prohibited, the density of the crowd and cannon fire make it a tough environment.
