Event details

College Nights at Ober Mountain turn winter Friday evenings into a laid-back mountain escape for students and young adults, typically running from late December through early March from 6 p.m. to midnight, when the slopes light up and the base lodge fills with groups trading lecture halls for ski runs and snowboarding sessions.

You’ll ride the aerial tram from downtown Gatlinburg 2.1 miles up to the ski area at 3,000 feet elevation, where ticket prices drop to around $30 for a lift-and-rental package—significantly cheaper than weekend rates—and the vibe shifts from family-focused daytime skiing to a social, energetic scene with music playing from the outdoor speakers and fire pits glowing near the lodge.

The terrain includes eight slopes ranging from beginner greens like Ski School Hill to intermediate blues like Cub Way and Mogul Ridge, plus a terrain park with rails and boxes for snowboarders; most college groups stick to the mid-mountain runs and spend time in the base area, where the indoor ice rink, arcade, and snack bar offer breaks between runs.

You’ll need a valid college ID to access the discounted rate, and tickets are sold at the tram station in downtown Gatlinburg or at the Ober Mountain ticket window once you arrive at the top; no advance reservations are required, but lines for rentals can stretch 20 minutes after 7 p.m., so arrive closer to 6 if you need boots and skis.

Snow conditions in the Smokies are variable—Ober relies heavily on snowmaking, and temperatures need to drop below freezing for at least a few nights to build a solid base—so check the snow report on Ober’s website before heading up; if coverage is thin, the ice rink and alpine slide remain open regardless of snow. Dress in layers with a waterproof jacket, gloves, and a hat, and bring cash for snacks and drinks, as some vendors at the lodge don’t accept cards.

When you’re done on the slopes, ride the tram back down to Gatlinburg’s Parkway, where the town glows with lights and you can walk to The Park Grill, founded in 1995 and set in a stone-and-timber building on the river, for steaks and mountain trout with a fireplace view.

Make a weekend of it by booking a cabin near Gatlinburg on Lake.com within reach of Douglas Lake, where you can spend Saturday morning fishing for striped bass or crappie before heading back to the mountain for another night of runs and camaraderie under the lights.
