Event details

The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club teams up with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service every winter to transform the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery (12790 Fish Hatchery Road) into a snow playground where beginners can test winter sports without the expense or intimidation of a resort. This free event offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing with guides and all equipment provided, giving families and first-timers a no-pressure introduction to gliding through the ponderosa pine forests and meadows that surround this historic 1940 hatchery complex. The same trails that wind through 180 acres in summer become groomed winter routes perfect for trying out your balance and building confidence before committing to gear purchases.

The hatchery itself was the largest salmon facility in the world when it opened, raising 1.2 million spring Chinook annually to compensate for fish losses upstream of Grand Coulee Dam. Park at the main lot and walk across the bridge to access the trail network, where volunteers help fit snowshoes and offer tips on technique. The event runs on select winter Saturdays (check Leavenworth Winter Sports Club’s calendar for exact dates), typically from 10 AM to 2 PM. Dress in layers and bring snacks, though downtown Leavenworth is only two miles north if you want to warm up afterward with a hot meal at München Haus (opened 2001), where Bavarian sausages and fire pits make for an ideal post-trail reward.

Lake Wenatchee State Park sits 20 miles north, offering its own network of groomed cross-country ski trails if you want to extend your winter skills practice across multiple days. Lake.com features cabins and waterfront rentals near Lake Wenatchee and Lake Chelan (an hour northeast), both perfect for families who want to combine winter sports exploration with lakeside stays that feel equally adventurous and restful.
