Event details

Join us on September 1, 2026, for the annual Coon Dog Labor Day Celebration in Cherokee, Alabama—a heartfelt gathering that honors the cherished coon hound, the state dog of Alabama. Set against the serene backdrop of the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard, this event offers a unique blend of tradition, community, and natural beauty. The cemetery, established in nineteen thirty-seven, serves as the final resting place for over 300 coon hounds, each with its own story. Surrounded by the tranquil landscapes of Freedom Hills, the area boasts lush forests and the nearby Tennessee River, creating a picturesque setting for families, friends, and pet lovers to come together and celebrate.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m., featuring a variety of activities that capture the spirit of Southern heritage. Enjoy live bluegrass music, participate in the lively liar’s contest, and witness the “Top Dog” coon hound parade. Savor delicious barbecue plates from local vendors, browse arts and crafts booths, and explore the vintage Corvette car show. For families, there’s a kids’ inflatable zone and a puppy playpen to keep the little ones entertained. The event is free to attend, with donations welcomed to support the upkeep of the cemetery.

This celebration is perfect for families with children, offering ample space for play and low-stress fun. Pet-loving travelers will appreciate the dog-friendly atmosphere, while romantic couples can find quiet corners and scenic photo spots amidst the natural beauty. Large reunion groups will find plenty of room for shared meals and group activities, fostering a sense of togetherness.
