Beads, costumes, and a Black Hills twist on Mardi Gras
Enjoy street-festival energy, local flavors, and live music in Deadwood in 2026—pair it with Mount Rushmore, Spearfish Canyon, and Custer State Park.
Event details
The Black Hills throw their own Fat Tuesday party, and Deadwood proves that Mardi Gras can thrive far north of New Orleans.
Held annually on the second weekend of February, the 2026 celebration takes place February 13 and 14. The event proudly bills itself as the best party north of New Orleans and fills Historic Main Street with energy across its casino lined blocks.
Friday night kicks off with a cocktail crawl featuring Hurricane specials at more than a dozen venues. The evening culminates with the Masquerade Ball at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center at 1906 Deadwood Mountain Drive.
Inside, aerialists, fire performers, and stilt walkers mingle with guests competing for Best Dressed prizes worth up to $250. A $10 cover gets you through the door and includes entry into gift card drawings held every 30 minutes.
Saturday brings the heart of the celebration with a free Cajun Cookoff from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Participating venues include the Historic Bullock Hotel at 633 Main Street, the Deadwood Social Club at Saloon No. 10 at 657 Main Street, and Mavericks at Gold Dust at 688 Main Street.
Guests can sample gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée at no cost, then vote with their dollars for the People’s Choice award, with proceeds benefiting local charities.
The evening parade rolls down Main Street at 7:00 PM, with floats tossing beads and candy to crowds of all ages. While most Friday events require 21 and over wristbands, the parade and Saturday’s family friendly hours are open to everyone.
For travelers planning a return trip in warmer months, Pactola Lake is located just 28 miles south on US 385 and offers the Black Hills’ largest reservoir, complete with marina rentals and swimming beaches during summer.
Rooms should be booked well in advance at properties such as the Franklin Hotel at 700 Main Street or Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort at 555 Main Street, as this weekend fills quickly.
