Balloon glow and lasers brighten Dover nights
Tethered balloon rides, glowing balloons, music, vendors, and a laser finale create a colorful two-night spectacle at Dover Motor Speedway.
Event details
The Woodlands at Dover Motor Speedway trade their usual roar for something quieter each August evening, as dozens of hot air balloons fill the infield for two nights of tethered rides, music, and a synchronized glow-and-laser show that builds toward a nightly finale around 9 p.m. The scale is substantial without tipping into spectacle for its own sake, a family-oriented evening built around a genuinely uncommon sight for this part of the state.
Tethered rides, priced at $35 with a required admission ticket, give visitors a chance to go up rather than just watch from the ground, a detail that separates this from festivals where balloons stay firmly earthbound as photo backdrops. The glow show at dusk, envelopes lit from within against a darkening sky, is the evening’s clear centerpiece.
Staying in Dover avoids a late drive home after the second night’s finale, and the extra time opens up First State Heritage Park, Bombay Hook, and other central Delaware attractions for daytime hours between the festival’s two evenings, rather than rushing straight from balloon glow to highway.
