Event details

The Easter Sunrise Service at Gatlinburg SkyPark brings worshippers to the top of Crockett Mountain each Easter Sunday for a brief, uplifting gospel service timed to the first light over the Great Smoky Mountains. The chairlift ride begins at 6 a.m., carrying you 1,800 feet up to the SkyDeck observation platform, where you’ll gather with other early risers as the sun breaks over Mount LeConte and paints the ridges in shades of gold and pink.

The service typically runs 30 to 40 minutes, led by a local pastor or chaplain, with a short scripture reading, a hymn or two sung a cappella by the crowd, and a brief message focused on renewal and hope—simple, sincere, and designed to let the mountain views speak for themselves. Admission to the service is free, though you’ll need to purchase a SkyLift ticket (usually around $35 for adults, $28 for children) to ride the chairlift; arrive by 5:45 a.m. to ensure you’re seated and at the top before sunrise around 6:45 a.m. in late March or early April.

Temperatures at the summit hover in the 30s to 40s at dawn, even when the valley below feels warmer, so layer with a fleece or down jacket, gloves, and a hat—you’ll be standing outdoors on an open-air deck for the full service. The chairlift operates in all but the heaviest rain or high winds, so check Gatlinburg SkyPark’s website or call ahead if the forecast looks stormy; if the service is canceled, many local churches hold indoor sunrise services as an alternative.

After descending, grab breakfast at the Pancake Pantry, a Gatlinburg institution since 1960 known for its sweet potato pancakes and lines that form by 8 a.m. on Easter morning, or head to Crockett’s Breakfast Camp for hearty skillets and strong coffee in a log-cabin setting.

For a full Easter weekend, book a cabin near Gatlinburg on Lake.com within range of Douglas Lake or Cherokee Lake, where you can spend Saturday afternoon fishing for bass or crappie and return to the mountains refreshed for Sunday’s sunrise.
