Event details

Huntington Beach earns its Surf City identity most completely on the Fourth of July, when the combination of a morning parade through downtown, a full day on one of California’s widest and most accessible public beaches, and an evening fireworks show launched from the pier over the Pacific creates a holiday that is almost aggressively Southern California in the best possible way. The fireworks launch at 9:00 p.m. from the Huntington Beach Pier at 103 Pacific Coast Highway and run approximately 30 minutes over the open ocean. The event is free, and the beach is your grandstand.

The Beach and the Pier

Huntington Beach Pier is one of the longest public piers on the West Coast at 1,856 feet, and it serves as both the launch platform and the visual centerpiece of the fireworks show. The pier stretches far enough into the Pacific that the fireworks above it appear to rise from the open ocean when viewed from the sand, with no competing skyline between you and the display.

The widest and least crowded beach viewing positions sit north of the pier, where the sand opens up and the crowd thins beyond the immediate pier area. Arriving by 7:00 p.m. and walking north of the Main Street intersection gives you space to settle in.

The Strand, the paved path running parallel to the beach, fills with cyclists, pedestrians, and spectators throughout the evening and is one of the more festive pre-show walks on any California waterfront.

The Fourth of July Parade

The Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade through downtown is one of the largest in Orange County and typically runs along Pacific Coast Highway and the surrounding streets in the mid-morning. The parade draws floats, marching bands, surf culture displays, and community organizations in a format that has been running for decades and reflects the city’s particular identity as a surf and beach town with genuine civic pride.

Pairing the morning parade with an afternoon on the beach and an evening at the fireworks creates one of the most complete single-day July 4th itineraries on the California coast.

Dining Near the Pier

Duke’s Huntington Beach on Pacific Coast Highway, named for legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku and open since 1999, is the most iconic waterfront dining address near the pier, with a surf-culture dining room and ocean views that suit the holiday well. Reservations for July 4th fill months in advance.

Bonefish Grill on Atlanta Avenue and Dukes’s more casual neighbor, The Longboard Restaurant and Pub on Pacific Coast Highway, are solid alternatives within walking distance of the pier for visitors who couldn’t land a reservation at the obvious choice. For a quick beachside meal before the show, the food vendors along Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway are reliable and well-suited to a crowd that prefers eating outdoors.

Where to Stay

Huntington Beach’s Pacific Coast Highway corridor offers a concentrated strip of hotel and vacation rental properties within a short walk of both the pier and the beach. Properties with ocean views fill faster than anything else on the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Book your stay near Huntington Beach on Lake.com and plan to have your beach position staked out well before the sun touches the Pacific.
