Dolphin Tournament Sends Anglers Across Lower Keys Waters
Key West hosts a two-day dolphin fishing tournament from Stock Island, pairing strong summer travel interest with nearby recreation, public viewing, and convenient overnight lodging.
Event details
Dolphinfish, not the marine mammal, are the target when the Florida Keys PBA Dolphin Tournament gets underway from Oceans Edge Resort & Marina, on Key West’s quieter Stock Island side. A captains’ meeting kicks off the weekend before two full fishing days send boats out for mahi-mahi in the waters off the Lower Keys, with weigh-ins and prizes closing out each evening.
The tournament’s Stock Island base offers a different vantage point on Key West: working marinas and a more local pace than Duval Street’s crowds, though the island’s famous strip is a short drive away for evenings off the water. Teams tend to settle in for the full run, splitting time between the marina and the rest of the island.
Because fishing days start early and weigh-ins run into the evening, staying on Stock Island or in Key West proper simplifies the schedule considerably. The tournament’s short, focused format also makes it easy to bookend with a few extra days for diving, snorkeling, or simply exploring an island that rewards travelers willing to look past its most famous street.
