Event details
The Fort Miles Museum summer season at Battery 519 begins on Memorial Day, making this WWII coastal defense site in Lewes a daily stop for military-history travelers. You visit inside Cape Henlopen State Park, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic, and the museum’s centerpiece is the massive Battery 519 bunker. The grounds and several outdoor exhibits are free to walk, though you will still pay the state park vehicle entrance fee to get in.
Start outdoors in the Artillery Park, where you can move between big guns, military vehicles, and interpretive displays at your own pace. When we step into Battery 519 on a guided tour, the scale becomes clear: a 15,000-square-foot reinforced concrete bunker built to defend the coast from enemy ships. Inside, you will see restored rooms, period artifacts, and context on the soldiers who served here.
Plan on about one hour for the bunker tour, priced at $6 per person, and arrive early on holiday weekends since the park can hit vehicle capacity by late morning. Wear comfortable walking shoes for sandy paths and concrete floors, carry water and sun protection for time outdoors, and bring a light layer since the bunker stays cool even in summer. Tours are often first come, first served at the museum, but booking through the state park website is smart during peak dates.
If you want to turn the visit into a coastal weekend, base yourself in Lewes or nearby Rehoboth Beach for easy access to the museum and the shoreline, and you can compare regional vacation homes through Lake.com. Many outdoor areas are accessible, but the bunker’s historic layout may be challenging for some visitors. Leashed dogs are generally allowed outdoors in the park areas, but they are not permitted inside the museum or the bunker.
