Event details

For four days every August, the Gillespie County Fairgrounds become a Texas summer tradition with livestock shows, pari-mutuel horse racing, carnival rides, and live music under the stars. Founded in 1881 and recognized as the oldest continuous county fair in Texas, this annual event typically runs from Thursday through Sunday on the third weekend of August. Thursday offers free grounds and concert admission (carnival extra), while Friday, Saturday, and Sunday require paid entry that varies by day and age (kids 5 and under always free). The fair kicks off with a downtown parade on opening day at 10 a.m., featuring over 200 units that march down Main Street from the courthouse to Edison Street. The fairgrounds are located at 530 Fair Drive in Fredericksburg, about an hour from Lake Buchanan and 40 minutes from Canyon Lake.

Families with kids, agriculture enthusiasts, and anyone who loves classic county fair experiences will find plenty here. Beyond the livestock competitions (market lambs, swine, goats, poultry, and breeding cattle), you’ll see FFA and 4-H exhibits, home skills displays featuring prize-winning pies and preserves, arts and crafts vendors, and an antique tractor show. Live pari-mutuel horse racing runs multiple days with simulcast options, and evening concerts feature country and rock acts on the main stage. Gates typically open at 5 p.m. Thursday, 1 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the carnival midway operating until 6 p.m. Sunday. Parking is free in the fairground lots, and you can bring lawn chairs for concerts and racing (no coolers, outside food, or pets except ADA service animals).

August in the Hill Country means hot days (95-100°F) and warm evenings (75-80°F), so dress light and stay hydrated. Beer and wine are sold at the fair (limit two alcoholic beverages per person), along with sodas and water. Yeti cups are allowed for pouring drinks. If heat becomes intense, take breaks in the air-conditioned exhibition halls where agricultural and home skills displays stay cool. Make it a full Hill Country getaway by staying near the fairgrounds for easy access, then using Fredericksburg as your base for day trips to Lake Buchanan, Pedernales Falls State Natural Area, and the wineries along the 290 Wine Trail. Lake.com offers lakefront rentals that give you morning swimming and fishing before afternoon fair activities.
