Event details

The Great Pershing Balloon Derby launched in 1977 when forty balloons lifted from Pershing State Park west of Brookfield, organized by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in the park that bears the name of General John J. Pershing, who grew up in nearby Laclede. The 50th edition runs Labor Day weekend 2026 — September 5 through 7 — and carries the distinction of being the longest continuously sanctioned balloon event in the United States, a record held across half a century of Labor Day weekends in north-central Missouri’s Linn County countryside. Admission at the Myron Peacher Memorial Launch Site is $3 per person or $10 per vehicle; cash only. Balloon rides are not sold at the derby itself.

The Weekend Schedule

Friday evening’s South Main Night Flame on South Main Street in downtown Brookfield opens the weekend at 7:30 p.m. — balloonists line the commercial district, inflating their envelopes and burning fuel in coordinated bursts that illuminate the street with warm, flickering light synchronized to music. The spectacle runs for roughly an hour and requires no admission, making it the easiest entry point for visitors arriving Friday and the most purely visual event of the weekend. Saturday morning’s John Petrehn Memorial Cup Flight launches from the Myron Peacher Memorial Launch Site on Route FF north of US-36 at 7:15 a.m., followed by Twin Parks activities from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. — craft vendors, garage sales, flea market, and food booths in Brookfield’s East Twin Park. The Main Street parade at noon covers the full downtown corridor. Saturday and Sunday afternoon gates at the launch site open at 4:00 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. balloon flight, followed by the Basel Downey Memorial Launch Site Nite Lite at 7:30 p.m., when balloonists inflate and burn in place after dark, creating a synchronized illuminated display set to music. Monday’s Labor Day morning flight at 7:15 a.m. closes the weekend’s balloon program. Volunteer-organized children’s activities include a “dress your ride” contest where children decorate strollers, bicycles, and tricycles in balloon themes.

Pershing State Park and the Surrounding Region

Pershing State Park, west of Brookfield on US-36, covers 3,615 acres of glacially flattened Missouri prairie alongside Lost Creek — a mosaic of wetlands, restored tallgrass prairie, and oak-hickory forest that represents one of the more complete prairie restoration efforts in the state. The park’s trail system winds through landscape types that have become increasingly rare in north-central Missouri’s agricultural plain, and the wetland sections support migratory waterfowl through fall. The General Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site in nearby Laclede, 12 miles west on US-36, preserves the two-story frame house where John J. Pershing grew up through the 1870s and 1880s — a modest but well-interpreted property that gives families direct contact with the man whose name the state park and balloon derby carry.

Where to Eat in and Around Brookfield

J’s BBQ (Brookfield, confirmed open through summer) is the most locally embedded barbecue operation in Linn County, with a wood-smoking tradition and a menu running sliced brisket, pulled pork, and the house burnt ends plate that the regional agricultural community gravitates toward on festival weekends. The house brisket sandwich with house-pickled jalapeños and the slow-smoked pork ribs are the kitchen’s most consistently praised preparations. Tequila Jalisco Mexican Restaurant (Brookfield, one of the Night Flame sponsors) covers the evening meal category with a straightforward regional Mexican menu that fills efficiently during the festival weekend’s denser-than-usual downtown activity. For a post-event breakfast before Monday’s morning flight, Brookfield’s downtown diner corridor serves the egg, biscuit, and hash brown format that festival mornings demand with the speed appropriate to a 7:15 a.m. launch window.

Points of Interest for Families

Pershing State Park’s Lost Creek interpretive trail covers the wetland and prairie habitats with signage calibrated to family nature education — sandhill cranes, great blue herons, and white-tailed deer are commonly visible from the trail during the Labor Day period, making the park’s short loop walks one of the more wildlife-productive family outdoor experiences within an hour of Brookfield. The North Central Missouri Regional Airport, 3 miles north of Brookfield, runs a fly-in event in conjunction with the derby that gives aviation-interested families an additional air show dimension beyond the balloon flights. Chillicothe, 30 miles east on US-36, offers the Sliced Bread Capital of the World Museum (the town where the Wonder Bread slicing machine was first demonstrated in 1928) alongside a well-preserved downtown commercial district that provides a morning stop between the balloon flight and the Twin Parks activities.

Book Your Stay Near the Water

Brookfield’s campground options along the route between Pershing State Park and the derby launch site provide the most logistically convenient overnight access for the early morning balloon flights. Search Lake.com for properties at Fountain Grove Conservation Area and the northern Missouri lake system — Stockton Lake 90 miles south, and Truman Lake in the broader Ozarks corridor, provide vacation rental options for visitors extending the Labor Day weekend into a fuller Missouri lakes stay.
