Ultrarunners circle the rugged San Juan Mountains overnight
Plan a Colorado getaway for Hardrock 100, combining 100-mile mountain ultrarunning through the San Juans with outdoor recreation and an overnight-friendly summer schedule.
Event details
A grueling high-altitude loop connects Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and Lake City each July in what many consider America’s most demanding mountain ultramarathon, crossing remote passes and historic mining terrain over more than a full day and night on course. Aid-station volunteers welcome spectators and can point families toward the best nearby vantage points along the loop.
Families supporting a runner become part of an elaborate logistical effort of their own, following crews between towns and aid stations across the loop, an active, moving way to experience the San Juan Mountains that few spectators see from a single fixed viewpoint.
Crews, pacers, and support teams typically require multiple nights across the region rather than a single overnight stay. Reserve lodging in Silverton, Ouray, or Telluride depending on which section the family plans to follow, pack layers for dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, and frame the trip around alpine lakes or jeep roads between aid-station stops. It is one of ultrarunning’s most demanding tests, best experienced by families willing to become part of the support effort. Cell service is unreliable across much of the course, so agree on fixed meeting times and places with any runner in advance.
