Event details

Every Monday from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, the Hayward Sports Center transforms into one of northern Wisconsin’s most satisfying open-air markets. The Monday Flea and Vendor Market draws more than 100 vendors — indoors and out — selling antiques, handmade crafts, vintage fishing gear, local art, seasonal collectibles, and fresh-grown produce along the shores of Lake Hayward. With free admission, a $3 suggested parking contribution, and operating hours running 8 AM to 3 PM, it is one of the most low-effort, high-reward stops in the Northwoods. The 2026 season runs from Memorial Day, May 25, through Labor Day weekend, with Saturday and Sunday bonus market days added on September 5 and 6.

What Monday Morning Looks Like Here

Arrive at 8 AM and the grounds are still settling into the day — vendors arranging displays, coffee cups in hand, the lake visible through the trees behind the main building. By 10 AM the market hits full stride. The indoor section of the Sports Center houses dealers with higher-end antiques and collectibles; the outdoor area sprawls with craft sellers, farm produce, clothing, and the kind of one-of-a-kind fishing equipment that Hayward’s serious angling culture produces in abundance. Live music performances run throughout the season, and a rotating cast of food vendors means a different lunch option nearly every week. Farmers market vendors make regular appearances with fresh vegetables, honey, and local baked goods. The relaxed pace and the setting — tree-lined, with the lake providing a constant background presence — make this the kind of stop that stretches from one hour to three without anyone noticing.

After the Market, Hit the Water

Hayward is the Freshwater Fishing Capital of the World, and it means it. The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum on Hall of Fame Drive is the most entertaining thing you can do with children in this part of Wisconsin — the centerpiece is a 143-foot walk-through muskie sculpture that doubles as an observation deck, and the museum inside covers bass, walleye, muskie, and panfish culture in extraordinary depth. Lake Hayward itself is open for canoes and kayaks from multiple launch points; guided fishing charters are available through local outfitters for walleye and muskie. The Namekagon River, part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, begins just outside Hayward and offers one of the state’s finest canoe routes through old-growth forest. For dinner after a full market day, Norwood Pines Supper Club on County Road B has been pouring old fashioneds and serving pan-fried walleye since 1931 — the Friday night fish fry is legendary, and the log-cabin interior feels like a direct line to the mid-century Northwoods. If you need a quicker stop, Angler’s Bar and Grill on Main Street does a solid Friday fish fry as well, with a broader menu for non-fishing families.

Getting There and Getting the Most of It

The Hayward Sports Center is located at 15785 W Third Street in Hayward. Parking is on-site and generally ample, with the $3 donation going toward facility upkeep. The market closes promptly at 3 PM, so plan your morning accordingly if you want full access to both indoor and outdoor sections. Late July and early August bring the highest vendor count; earlier in the season the market is smaller but less crowded. Weather in northern Wisconsin during summer runs warm and occasionally humid, with afternoon thunderstorms possible — the indoor section provides easy refuge if the sky opens up. Leashed dogs are welcome on the outdoor grounds; check with individual vendors about indoor access.

If You’re Going with Kids
The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame is a short drive from the market and genuinely holds children’s attention. The walk-through muskie alone earns its reputation. Combine both stops for a full, low-cost family morning.

Make a Week of It on Lake.com

Hayward is lake country by definition — Namekagon Lake, Lac Courte Oreilles, and Lake Hayward itself are all within a short radius, each with waterfront rental options. Lake.com’s listings in the Hayward area cover everything from modest fishing cabins to larger family lodges with dock access. If you are planning around the Labor Day weekend market bonus days, book at least two months out — the Northwoods fills up in late summer.
