Event details

Heiva i Kauaʻi fills Kapaʻa Beach Park with vivid costumes, powerful drumming, and both solo and group competition, drawing performers ranging from young dancers just beginning their training to experienced cultural practitioners sharing stories rooted in Tahitian tradition. The beachfront setting gives the drumming an added resonance that carries well beyond the immediate crowd.

The competition format distinguishes Heiva from Hawaiʻi’s own hula festivals, even as both share deep Polynesian roots. Tahitian dance’s faster tempo and more percussive rhythms give the two-day event a noticeably different energy, appealing to visitors curious about the broader Polynesian cultural landscape beyond Hawaiian tradition alone and the ways the two forms diverge and echo one another.

More than 1,000 people attend each day, and the beachfront location supports an easy east-coast Kauaʻi stay for visitors basing themselves in or near Kapaʻa. Travelers can add the coastal path connecting nearby beach parks, a paddle on the Wailua River, or additional swimming beaches within a short drive of the competition grounds and the rest of Kapaʻa’s compact, walkable town center along the highway.
