Event details

Memorial Day weekend in Honolulu opens with runners tracing the Diamond Head shoreline at Kapiʻolani Park, where the Hibiscus Half Marathon offers three distances, half marathon, 15K, and five-mile, all launching before the sun fully clears the volcanic ridge above Waikīkī. The early start times the race precisely to catch the coastline at its most flattering: soft morning light, calm trade winds, and a clear view toward Diamond Head’s crater rim.

The course itself threads along some of Oʻahu’s most photographed shoreline without ever feeling like a tourist route, since Kapiʻolani Park’s broad lawns and mature banyan trees give runners a genuine sense of place rather than a highway shoulder. Multiple distance options mean the event draws a wide range of participants, from serious half-marathon competitors to families tackling the shorter five-mile course together, with age-group awards handed out for each distance separately.

Packet pickup at a nearby Waikīkī resort makes lodging in the neighborhood especially convenient, sparing early risers a long drive before the 5:30 a.m. start. Once the race wraps, the same stretch of coastline offers an easy transition into beach time, a stop at the Honolulu Zoo, or simply a slow walk through the park while the morning is still cool and the crowds have yet to arrive.
