Memorial Day 5K through Hilton Head’s Port Royal
A Memorial Day 5K run or walk through Port Royal Plantation, with family-friendly awards and a meaningful way to start your Hilton Head beach day.
Event details
Start your Memorial Day morning with the Hilton Head Freedom 5K, a run and walk on the island’s northeastern end inside the private gates of Port Royal Plantation, where the Atlantic meets Port Royal Sound. You will move along shaded residential roads under moss-draped oaks and through maritime forest, a calm, coastal setting that suits both reflection and a solid effort.
This event is a community tribute to service members, with proceeds benefiting the Semper Fi & America’s Fund. You will feel the patriotic tone throughout, from red, white, and blue race kits to the shared purpose that brings serious runners, casual walkers, and families to the same start line.
Race morning is straightforward. The 8:00 AM start is at the Port Royal Plantation Beach House, with chip timing, water stations, and an easy-to-follow route. Plan to arrive at the gate by 7:15 AM for parking and packet pickup, and remember there is no race-day registration. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome.
A waterfront pre-race ceremony honors veterans, then the finish area gathers everyone for refreshments and conversation before many head to the nearby beach. Participants receive commemorative dog tags and a tech shirt, and awards follow for top finishers across age divisions plus prizes for the most patriotic dressed individuals and families. For the easiest commute, book a rental on the north end of the island, and you can also browse seasonal stays through Lake.com in areas like Shelter Cove or Folly Field.
