Step inside Alley Mill as summer tours begin
Visit the postcard-famous red mill at Alley Spring for short talks and tours that begin Memorial Day and run daily through the busy season.
Event details
Starting Memorial Day weekend, the Historic Alley Mill Talk and Tours give you a tight, ranger led introduction to the red 1894 mill at Alley Spring in Ozark National Scenic Riverways near Eminence, Missouri. Talks run on the half hour, so you can fold a visit into a day on the Jacks Fork or Current River. You will walk through the three story building and learn how water turbines powered the iron grinders and how flour moved through the original sifting room.
Between sessions, spend time along Alley Spring, where clear, blue green water flows past the mill and into the spring branch. Inside, the second floor museum adds context with tools and artifacts from Shannon County settlers. If you have extra time, you can add the 1.5 mile Overlook Trail for elevated views of the mill pond and the dolomite cliffs, and you can also walk over to the Storys Creek One Room Schoolhouse.
Plan to arrive by 10:00 AM if you want the easiest parking, especially on holiday weekends when the main picnic area lot fills quickly. Entry to the mill and all ranger talks is free. Bring a reusable water bottle and insect repellent for the wooded paths, and wear sturdy shoes if you are including the schoolhouse or trails. If the mill feels busy, wait by the spring branch and join the next half hour talk. The grounds and first floor are accessible, but upper floors require stairs. Pets are welcome on the grounds and are not allowed inside the historic buildings.
For an easy base, book cabins or vacation rentals in Eminence or Winona, or look for regional lodging through Lake.com if you are pairing the visit with a weekend of floating. Swimming is not allowed in Alley Spring to protect the ecosystem. The machinery no longer runs, but rangers use the intact components to explain each step of the process. If weather turns, you are covered since the tours take place inside the mill.
