Trail half marathon and 10K in Pioneertown
Run a challenging high-desert trail race starting in historic Pioneertown. Choose the half marathon or 10K and celebrate afterward on Mane Street.
Event details
In the high desert near Joshua Tree National Park the morning begins on Mane Street in Pioneertown a living movie set built in the 1940s as an 1880s Western town. What looks like a backlot is in fact a working getaway with saloons porches and that sun washed stillness that makes even a bib number feel cinematic.
The race turns quickly from nostalgia to raw terrain with about 95 percent of the course on dirt and singletrack. Trails thread the Pioneertown Mountain Preserve and the Sawtooth Mountains with wide horizon views and a steady reminder that you are running at roughly 4000 feet. The half marathon brings close to 400 meters of climbing enough to earn the grit in the name.
One of the most memorable details is water. Parts of this preserve are so remote that aid reaches the course the old way by foot or by horseback with local riders helping supply stations. It is a small logistical marvel that also feels perfectly on theme.
The weekend is designed like a desert escape with purpose. Proceeds support the John Wayne Cancer Foundation so the miles fund research and patient programs. After the finish settle into Pioneertown for lunch then take the slow road to Joshua Tree for late day light and stargazing or book a night timed to live music at Pappy and Harriets.
