Event details

San Francisco’s Fourth of July celebration asks very little of you and delivers a great deal in return. The northern waterfront along the Embarcadero and PIER 39 organizes a full-day program on July 4th from 2:00 p.m. through the fireworks finale, which launches from barges near PIER 39 and Aquatic Park after dark. The combination of bay breezes, waterfront crowds, sea lions on the docks, and the Bay Bridge glow in the distance creates an atmosphere that is recognizably San Francisco in a way that few holiday settings anywhere in the country can match. Admission to the waterfront is free.

The Day’s Arc and What to Expect

Fisherman’s Wharf and the PIER 39 complex draw afternoon crowds for live music, street performers, waterfront dining, and the straightforward pleasure of watching the bay from one of the most photographed urban waterfronts in the world. As the evening approaches, the crowd shifts and grows along the northern shoreline, with Aquatic Park, Ghirardelli Square, and the grassy areas near the Maritime National Historical Park filling with viewers staking out positions before the barges light up. The fireworks are best seen from the waterfront itself, the Hyde Street Pier area, and the east-facing portions of the Marina Green.

Weather is the most important variable to plan around: San Francisco in July is frequently cool and foggy, with temperatures dropping into the low 50s Fahrenheit after sunset. A warm layer and a windproof shell are not optional on the bay waterfront in the evening, regardless of what the afternoon felt like.

Beyond the Wharf

The northern waterfront connects naturally to Crissy Field, the restored bay shoreline along the Presidio, which offers some of the most expansive bay views in the city and a wide grassy stretch where blankets and lawn chairs spread out well before the fireworks begin. Alcatraz Island sits directly in the sightline from most northern waterfront positions, and a morning ferry tour to the island on July 4th or the preceding days makes for one of the more distinctly San Francisco ways to frame the holiday. The Golden Gate Bridge, a few miles west, is best seen in the morning before the bay fog typically builds through the early afternoon.

Dining at the Wharf

The Wharf’s dining scene ranges from tourist-facing crab shacks to genuinely strong local seafood kitchens. Scoma’s on Pier 47, open since 1965 and reached only by a short walk along the working fishing docks, remains one of the most authentic seafood addresses on the waterfront, with Dungeness crab, local sand dabs, and cioppino that reflect the neighborhood’s fishing heritage. Alioto’s Restaurant at the foot of Taylor Street, in operation since 1925 and one of the oldest family-run restaurants on the Wharf, is the most historic address for a celebratory dinner before the fireworks. For Dungeness crab from a sidewalk stand with a bay view, the stands along Jefferson Street are as much a part of the Wharf experience as anything else on the waterfront.

Where to Stay
