Kona’s parade rolls into fireworks over Kailua Bay
Celebrate in Kailua-Kona with a waterfront parade along town streets, then watch a barge-launched fireworks show over scenic Kailua Bay.
Event details
The Kailua-Kona Independence Day celebration is the Big Island’s most complete mainland-facing holiday tradition, combining a full community parade through historic Ali’i Drive with barge fireworks over Kailua Bay in a sequential evening program that the Kailua-Kona Community Parade Association has refined across nearly three decades.
The free celebration begins at 6:00 p.m. with the parade along Kuakini Highway and Ali’i Drive, with road closures in effect from 5:45 to 8:15 p.m. The Independence Day Extravaganza fireworks launch from a barge moored in Kailua Bay at 8:00 p.m.
The parade route’s passage along Ali’i Drive, Kona’s most atmospheric waterfront corridor, means that spectators line up with the ocean directly behind the procession, giving the floats and marching groups a Pacific horizon as their backdrop.
Ali’i Drive and the Bay
Ali’i Drive runs south from Kailua Pier along the bay for approximately 3 miles and is Kona Town’s most characterful street, lined with Hawaiian-style shopfronts, historic sites, and open-air restaurants that face the water.
The pier area at 75-5660 Palani Road is the natural pre-parade and pre-fireworks gathering point, with benches, a small park, and direct views across the bay toward the fireworks barge position.
The Ahu’ena Heiau at the pier’s edge, the restored summer residence of Kamehameha the Great, is open for viewing from the pier and gives the Independence Day setting an immediate pre-contact Hawaiian historical dimension that most American holiday venues lack entirely.
Snorkeling at the Old Airport Beach, about 2 miles north of the pier on Kuakini Highway, is the Kona morning activity that best prepares the body and the mind for an evening of parade and fireworks.
Points of Interest for Families
The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival grounds and the coffee farms of the Kona District on the slopes of Hualalai, accessible via Highway 180 above Kailua-Kona, offer family tours through one of the only coffee-growing regions in the United States, with tastings, farm walks, and the historic Captain Cook monument at Kealakekua Bay a short additional drive south.
The bay at Kealakekua, a marine sanctuary, offers the finest snorkeling on the Kona Coast with extraordinary coral coverage, spinner dolphin populations, and morning visibility that exceeds 100 feet on calm days.
For the holiday weekend, a morning kayak tour from Nāpōʻopoʻo landing to the Captain Cook Monument and back is the single activity most likely to define the trip for families with children old enough to paddle.
Dining on Ali’i Drive and Kona Town
Huggo’s on the Rocks at 75-5828 Kahakai Road is one of Kona’s most celebrated waterfront restaurants, in operation since 1969, with a fresh catch preparation and a grilled mahi-mahi that reflect the restaurant’s direct relationship with the local fishing fleet operating from Kailua Harbor.
For a parade-night meal, the Fish Hopper on Alii Drive is well-positioned along the parade route with a broad seafood menu and second-floor lanai seating that works as both a dinner perch and a parade viewing platform.
Da Poke Shack on Alii Drive has been serving what many consider the finest poke on the island since 2011, with a rotating selection of fresh ahi, octopus, and salmon preparations that can be assembled into a beach or pier picnic before the evening program.
Where to Stay
The Kona Coast’s vacation rental inventory spans both the oceanfront resort belt and the coffee country hillsides above town, with waterfront properties offering direct views across Kailua Bay toward the fireworks barge.
Book your stay near Kailua-Kona on Lake.com and arrive in time for a morning snorkel before the parade transforms Ali’i Drive into the Big Island’s most festive waterfront street.
