Event details

Kailua-Kona’s Independence Day celebration begins with an evening parade along Aliʻi Drive and closes with fireworks over Kailua Bay, giving the town’s compact waterfront village two distinct holiday spectacles within the same short evening. The setting lets visitors move easily between the parade route, the pier, and waterfront restaurants without needing to relocate between events.

The evening timing sets this parade apart from Kona’s earlier King Kamehameha Day procession along the same stretch of road. Streetlights and building facades take on a different character after dark, and the fireworks that follow give the evening a natural, building crescendo that a daytime parade alone couldn’t match, with the bay itself doubling as a second stage once the display begins.

With an estimated 7,000 attendees plus visitors already in town for the marathon and various fishing tournaments happening the same week, lodging and dinner reservations should be made well in advance. The fireworks remain visible from several shoreline locations beyond the immediate parade route, giving latecomers workable options even if the prime viewing spots along Aliʻi Drive fill early in the afternoon.
