Event details

There are bigger fireworks shows in Iowa, but few with a setting this good. Keosauqua’s annual 4th of July celebration takes place Saturday, July 4, 2026, at City Park along the Des Moines River, with kids’ games, a pedal pull competition, a street dance, and raffle drawings filling the daylight hours before one of southeast Iowa’s most celebrated fireworks displays launches over the water after dark.

What to Expect
The day runs from 10 a.m. to roughly 10 p.m. The pedal pull draws a genuine crowd, with kids competing by weight class on a course set up through the park. The street dance carries the evening before fireworks close the night over the river. The Des Moines River bends tightly through Keosauqua, giving the launch site a natural amphitheater effect that photographers and regulars both know well.

Who This Is For
Adventure Families with younger kids will have a full day without burning anyone out. The pedal pull, open park space, and river access pace well across age groups. Legacy Gatherers using the Villages of Van Buren as a reunion base will find Keosauqua central to the area’s attractions and easy to anchor a multi-day itinerary around.

Local Knowledge
Hotel Manning, built in 1899 and one of Iowa’s oldest continuously operating hotels, is within walking distance of the celebration. The dining room serves regional comfort classics, and the house-made pies are worth planning around. Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, the largest state park in Iowa, begins just outside of town with hiking, fishing, and some of the most scenic river bluff views in the Midwest.

Logistics
Free admission. City Park is at 100 Van Buren Street, Keosauqua. Activities begin at 10 a.m. Fireworks after dark, typically around 9:30 p.m. Street parking is limited; arrive before noon to secure a spot near the river.

Where to Stay
For a lakeside base with more amenities than the river corridor provides, search rentals near Lake Rathbun on Lake.com. Book your stay in southeast Iowa for the full holiday weekend before shoreline properties go.
