Key Largo Triathlon Races Through Pennekamp’s Coastal Landscape
Key Largo hosts a destination triathlon beside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, pairing summer travel with nearby recreation and convenient overnight lodging.
Event details
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, better known for snorkeling trips to the country’s first underwater park, hosts the Key Largo Triathlon Summer each August, sending athletes through a swim, bike, and run course framed by clear water, coral reefs, and mangrove shoreline rather than the urban backdrops common to most triathlons. Few race settings double as bona fide natural attractions in their own right.
The park’s underwater scenery is what distinguishes this event from Florida’s many lake- and bay-based triathlons. Competitors and supporters alike are, in effect, racing within one of the state’s premier snorkeling and diving destinations, with reef tours and glass-bottom boat trips available before or after the competition itself.
Given Key Largo’s island geography and the race’s early start, an overnight stay is close to essential for competitors and strongly recommended for supporters hoping to avoid a long pre-dawn drive down the Overseas Highway. The payoff extends well past race morning: Pennekamp’s reefs and mangrove trails make for an easy full day of exploration once the finish line clears, turning a single race into a proper Upper Keys weekend.
