Event details

Known as the Race Across the Sky, this 100-mile out-and-back mountain-bike course climbs roughly 12,000 feet toward a 12,600-foot high point above historic Leadville, with the demanding Columbine Mine climb defining the race’s severe altitude challenge each August. A results board near the start and finish keeps waiting families updated on a rider’s progress throughout the very long day.

Families supporting a rider can watch both the start and eventual finish from the same downtown Leadville intersection, giving spectators a natural bookend to a very long day even without following the remote out-and-back course itself.

Lottery entry, course scouting, and race-day crew logistics produce substantial multi-night demand around Leadville. Reserve a Stay well before the lottery results even arrive if possible, pack serious layers for cold mountain mornings, and add Turquoise Lake or Twin Lakes to extend the visit into a fuller Sawatch Range getaway. It is one of mountain biking’s most prestigious high-altitude tests, best supported with real advance planning. Even short walks feel harder at this elevation, so keep other planned activities genuinely light on race day.
