Event details

Lewes runs the most structurally complete and most distinctly local Independence Day celebration on the Delaware coast, building its July 4th from morning through dusk across four separate events that give the day a satisfying narrative arc without requiring a car between them. The schedule begins at 9:00 a.m. with old-fashioned children’s games on Second Street, continues at 1:30 p.m. with the Independence Day Lewes Boat Parade departing from Roosevelt Inlet along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal to Fisherman’s Wharf at 107 Anglers Road, transitions at approximately 5:00 p.m. to the famously unpredictable Doo-Dah Parade on Savannah Road, and concludes at dusk with the Go Fourth Lewes fireworks launched from a barge off Lewes Beach. All events are free and community-funded through donations from the Lewes business community, local residents, and the Go Fourth Committee chaired by Russ Palmer.

The Boat Parade and the Canal

The Independence Day Lewes Boat Parade, organized by the Overfalls Foundation and the Lewes-Rehoboth Beach Rotary Club and sponsored by Freedom Boat Club, is the event that most directly captures Lewes’s maritime identity. Vessels depart Roosevelt Inlet at 1:30 p.m. and pass the judges’ reviewing stand at Fisherman’s Wharf at approximately 2:00 p.m., where the Mayor announces the entries and judges drawn from Lewes City Council and the Overfalls Foundation evaluate each boat on the quality of its patriotic decoration. The awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. takes place on the deck of the Lightship Overfalls, a 1938 Coast Guard lightship permanently moored at the Lewes waterfront and open to visitors as a floating museum. The best canal-side viewing positions for the parade are along both banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal between Roosevelt Inlet and Fisherman’s Wharf, with Canalfront Park on the western bank offering a grassy, shaded position with strong sightlines.

The Doo-Dah Parade and the Fireworks

The Doo-Dah Parade, which forms near Lloyd’s Market on Savannah Road and winds to Second Street and back at an unannounced time of approximately 5:00 p.m., is the event that best illustrates Lewes’s community character. Open to all without registration, it draws costumed participants, decorated pets, decorated bicycles, and the kind of spontaneous local participation that organized parades cannot replicate. The fireworks at dusk, visible from the beach between Roosevelt Inlet and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal, are best watched from the sand itself, which is free of vendors and should be approached on foot or by bicycle to avoid the post-show vehicle congestion. The Dogfish Inn on Savannah Road, a craft-brewery-affiliated boutique hotel, sells canned Dogfish Head cocktails on the street from 3:00 p.m. as a benefit for Go Fourth Lewes, and the Harbour Restaurant at Canal Square hosts a July 4th boat parade viewing party from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Dining in Lewes

The Lighthouse Restaurant on Anglers Road is Lewes’s most established waterfront dining address, with a menu of Delaware Bay seafood, crab cakes, and local oysters served on a deck with canal views that suits a celebratory Fourth of July dinner. Striper Bites on Savannah Road is the livelier local alternative, with a coastal American menu that runs from fish tacos and crab-topped flatbreads to whole steamed crabs served with old bay and drawn butter. For a morning breakfast before the children’s games, Crooked Hammock Brewery’s brunch service on Savannah Road offers eggs and breakfast dishes alongside morning coffee in a relaxed setting that suits a slow holiday start.

Where to Stay

Lewes’s canal-front and Delaware Bay shoreline offer waterfront rental properties that position you within walking distance of every event on the Fourth of July schedule, while Cape Henlopen’s proximity adds a state park and bay beach to the weekend’s water options. Book your stay near Lewes on Lake.com and plan a full holiday weekend that begins on the bay and ends watching fireworks lift above the Atlantic from Lewes Beach at dusk.
