Underground limestone chambers open for Memorial weekend
Take the Classic Tour at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, where guided walks reveal cathedral-sized rooms, sparkling formations, and an underground detour near Whitehall.
Event details
Lewis and Clark Caverns Classic Cave Tours at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park put you on foot inside Montana’s best known limestone cavern system. You are a short drive from Whitehall and the Jefferson River, and the guided route takes you through large chambers lined with columns and sculpted flowstone. Plan it as an early anchor for a Memorial Day weekend itinerary if you want geology, scale, and a cool 50 degree interior.
The Classic Tour covers about two miles and is built for active travelers. Expect roughly 600 stairs, steady elevation changes, and a few tight sections where you bend and slide through narrow passages. Your guide will pace the group and point out formations along the way, including major stops such as the Cathedral Room and the Brown Waterfall Room.
This is a physically demanding tour and it is not wheelchair accessible. Children under five are not permitted on the Classic Tour. If you are traveling with younger kids or you want a less strenuous option, book the Paradise Tour instead. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth, and non residents also pay an $8 park entry fee per vehicle.
Arrive at the upper visitor center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time, and buy tickets online in advance since holiday weekend slots fill quickly. Wear sturdy closed toe shoes with good traction because cave floors can be wet, and bring a light jacket for the constant 50 degree temperature. For lodging, you can base yourself in Whitehall or Three Forks for proximity, or choose Bozeman about 45 miles east for more amenities. Lake.com is a useful place to search vacation rentals and cabins near river routes and mountain trails. If tours are at capacity, spend the day on the park’s above ground hiking trails or head to Renova Hot Springs for a slower afternoon.
