Holiday parade lights up Fredericksburg’s historic downtown
Watch dazzling floats roll through downtown for Light the Night, then linger for holiday shopping, cocoa stops, and twinkly small-town charm.
Event details
On the first Friday of December each year, Fredericksburg’s historic Main Street becomes a moving light show as more than 150 illuminated floats, marching bands, and holiday performers travel from Washington to Bowie Streets. Held December 5, 2025 (and December 4, 2026), this 30-year tradition presented by H-E-B and the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and runs until approximately 7:45 p.m. Admission is free along the entire parade route, with reserved bleacher seating available for purchase ($40 per seat) in front of the library for those who want guaranteed sightlines. The parade features local businesses, schools, churches, and community groups showcasing creative floats wrapped in thousands of lights, creating a spectacle that draws thousands of spectators. Before and after the parade, AfterGlow festivities on Marktplatz (3 p.m. to 9 p.m.) offer food and beverage vendors, holiday music, kids activities, and free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Peppermint Platz from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Families with young children, couples seeking holiday atmosphere, and anyone who loves small-town Christmas traditions will find this magical. The parade is broadcast live on CBS Austin from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and streamed on FBG.Live for those unable to attend in person. Arrive by 5:30 p.m. for the best free viewing spots along Main Street (bring lawn chairs and blankets), or claim your reserved bleacher seat by 6 p.m. Street parking fills early, so use public lots behind Main Street businesses or arrive by 4 p.m. for curbside spots. The parade runs rain or shine, with an inclement weather backup date scheduled one week later if severe conditions force postponement.
Early December in the Hill Country brings cool evenings (40-55°F) with occasional light winds, so dress in warm layers, bring gloves, and consider blankets for sitting on curbs or lawn chairs. After the parade, Main Street’s shops, wine bars, and German bakeries stay open late, their storefronts decorated with holiday lights that extend the festive atmosphere. Turn this into a full Hill Country Christmas weekend by spending Saturday browsing Fredericksburg’s antique shops and tasting rooms, then driving to Enchanted Rock for winter hiking or visiting nearby Pedernales Falls State Natural Area. Lake.com offers vacation rentals near Canyon Lake and Lake LBJ, where you can enjoy quiet lakefront mornings before returning to Fredericksburg for evening holiday events and German dinners on Main Street.
