Triathletes race through Delaware’s largest freshwater pond
Olympic and sprint triathlons combine open-water swimming, cycling, and running at Lums Pond State Park, attracting athletes for a destination race.
Event details
Lums Pond State Park offers something genuinely uncommon in Delaware: a freshwater triathlon course, set against a pond ringed by forest rather than the ocean swells that define the state’s coastal races. Olympic and sprint-distance triathlons run alongside aquabike and relay divisions, giving athletes of considerably different fitness levels and time commitments a reason to sign up for the same morning of competition.
The calm water is a real advantage for less experienced swimmers intimidated by open-ocean starts, while the park’s road and trail network gives the cycling and running legs a scenic, shaded route that avoids much of summer’s harsher midday heat and direct sun, a small but meaningful edge over the state’s more exposed coastal courses.
Camping in the park or staying nearby the night before removes any early-morning drive from the equation. Once the race wraps by early afternoon, paddling, hiking, or a run through the park’s Go Ape aerial course fill out the rest of the day. Entry starts at $84.70, with pricing that varies by division.
